The Sligo Times, edited by Robert Smyllie, published over thirty poems during 1913. Very few of these seem to have been composed by Sligo writers. The majority were inspirational poems, songs or hymns taken from other newspapers, collections or hymn books. Many were were not attributed though the author was known.

The best known of the writers whose work was included was the American romantic poet,
James Russell Lowell (1819–1891) whose Freedom was included in June.

The poems that appear to have been written by local writers are Johnny Reid, Play Up Rovers, Sligo!, The Ghost Nurse and Well-Loved Name. There are a number of other which may have been written by locals. These include

The Sligo Times gave publicity to the publication of a collection of poetry, A Wreath of Song, by a Sligo-born author, Michael Hargadon, (pictured left) during 1913.

This collection, Hargadon's first, contained two long poems, Love and War and Old Times Restored. The book was published by the Carlow Nationalist which may have been Hargaron's employer at the time.

This volume is not mentioned by John McTernan in his article on Hargadon in Worthies of Sligo and the National Library of Ireland does not seem to have a copy. Hargadon was born in Calry near Sligo town in 1888.

He became a journalist and in 1915 emigrated to Canada where he continued as a journalist with the Montreal Daily Star. Later he became publicity officer with the Canadian Pacific Railways.

His collection, A Lovely Home, had been published in 1915 by Maunsel, London. In Canada he continued to write poetry and became a well-known poet. He published two poetry collections there, Irish and Canadian Poems (1921) and Among the Mountains (1925). He died in Montreal in 1968.
